The Ordinary Extraordinary

from Chapter 2 - Notes on the History of Polygamy

The British comedian Eddie Izzard, who is a transvestite, opens his exceedingly funny show Dress to Kill with an explanation for his audience.  After describing the transvestite as a male tomboy and a male lesbian, he clarifies the difference between the weirdo transvestites you occasionally hear about from the sensationalist media and those like himself, whom he refers to as “executive transvestites.”  There you have it in a nutshell.  Lingering about this world are the weird fundamentalist Mormon polygamists, and the sleazy swingers, and the deranged religious prophets with their compounds full of munitions and children . . . and then there are the executive polyamorists.  Like us.
