One day while working at Crate & Barrel, a gay man from the furniture department and a straight woman from the accessories department, standing abreast and looking very much to be on a mission, approached my desk. . . . They began with warnings and qualifiers. Please don’t be offended. Please don’t take this the wrong way. Some of us were just curious. I braced myself. They drew in breaths. “We were wondering . . .” one of them began, and the other finished, “. . . which team do you play for?” Interest had been shown by both teams, they explained.
Let me tell you now, dear reader, that I’ve never been so flattered. Not for being taken as a metrosexual with a hazily defined sexuality. I didn’t care either way about that. But what did gratify me was that interest had been shown—and by both teams!
