The Ordinary Extraordinary
from Chapter 6 - The Better Angels of Our Nature
One day, a day as commonplace as any, one of us inquired of the other, “What if things with Alice ever became physical?” It seems a testament to the ease with which the idea surfaced that neither of us can recall who first brought up the idea. Moreover, from the beginning the thought was that something might develop romantically with Alice: simultaneously, and between all three of us. We would want it no other way (if anything should develop, that is).
Well then: what if things with Alice became physical? What are we talking about? A one-time fling, or a sustained girlfriend/boyfriend/girlfriend relationship? Are we sure one or both of us wouldn’t crack under emotional duress? And could we be sure Alice wouldn’t crack under the strangeness of the circumstances? Would she even entertain such an idea? How the hell does one—or rather, how do two approach a person with such a proposition?
