The Ordinary Extraordinary
from Chapter 12 - The Reactions of Some
Throughout the years, numerous people have reacted with fear or disgust when faced with the knowledge of our lifestyle. The disgust of the religious conservative or homophobe is understandable. Idiotic, yes, but within the realm of understanding. The fear that some people find welling up within themselves is a far more difficult reaction to comprehend. Are they fearing that their wives and sisters will fall under our sway? Do they fear that they themselves will be interested in such an arrangement and, should they allow themselves to ponder it, that they will destroy some portion of the life (real or imagined) they’ve constructed for themselves? Or is it that they’re just fearful of anything they don’t fully understand? We are, simply and plainly, at a confused loss for what these people are frightened of.
Is it really a matter of civil rights? What is assured is that it is a matter of constraining love to traditional—or at least currently-accepted—forms. It is a matter of keeping an idea based in shared love and reduced jealousy to the fringe of the social scene. It is a matter of denying options to a person’s heart, to a person’s life. It is a matter of shunting aside people because they stir your fears. It is a matter of civil rights.
